Hurry on down just a few days left!!

What a fabulous turn out for our walks this year.

Daffodils are the best that they have ever been and although the early varieties have taken a bit of a battering with the wind and rain the last couple of nights we are fortunate that the late flowering varieties are evident. meaning that there’s  plenty to see over the next few days.  We still have a few places left on our Daffodil tours from Wed 9th – Sat 12th April, times at 10.30 and 2pm each day( please call 01606 889380 to book)

or self walks all day upto and including Sun 13th 10am until 3pm.

Come on down!!

Make a special day of it incorporating a trip to our super local “The Plough” at Whitegate.

Some nice pics on face book too  ‘daffodil walks’  ( Whitegate)

Don’t Panic, Mr Mainwaring!

Don’t panic! We will have thousands and thousands of daffodils in prime condition for the daffodil walks!

Even though many varieties are coming out now, we have over 600 varietiess that carry on flowering right up to May so there’s always something to see. Our Magnificence are out in glorious show right now, and will soon be joined by the Carlton which should be at their best over the walk weeks!

If you would like to join just for the self-guided walks earlier than the talks starting, this will be possible from the 26th March, please just call in advance.

The daffodils will last longer in bloom because of all the wet weather over winter, which combined with the good baking that the bulbs had over last summer, will make this years show be one of the best for many years!

Daffodils coming up for 2014

Walking round the fields today I have observed a very heavy crop of daffodils for this year, due mostly to the hot summer last year, and of course the amount of rain throughout the winter which will prolong the flowering season.

Should be on target this year with lots and lots of fine flowers!

Planting Update

Now is the perfect time for planting out your daffodils – just as it turns wet and cold for October.

This week I’ve been enjoying planting out about 2000 new bulbs with 9 different varieties around the woods, the pingot, the steps, verges, and plenty of other places I won’t remember until they start to pop up next spring. Parisienne, Victorious, Tahiti, Apotheose, Yellow Cheerfulness, Rijnvelts Early Sensation, Barrett Browning, Dutch Master, Fortune, and another I can’t remember.

Hopefully a long flowering season for all to enjoy!

Walk dates for 2014

Walks for 2014 will be from Saturday 29th March to Sunday 13th April inclusive. Walks will be available in the morning starting at 10:30am, and self-guided walks in the afternoon.
Although 2013 was a very unusual year in how late the daffodils started to emerge, we’ve moved the dates a week later for 2014 so that the walks are most likely to cover the peak of shows and widest range of varieties to see.

Cold Weather and Late Daffodils

This year the daffodils have been later than we’ve ever known them, and where we expected the fields to be in full glorious bloom by the end of March, there was hardly a bud showing.

Mr and Mrs Green from Delamere kindly donated some of their N.Cyclamineus to help the daffodil walks that were in crisis due to the late season! We hope you spotted them just over the bridge down in the woods.

Thankyou to everyone who came along to support Macmillan, we hope you still enjoyed the talks and guide and the countryside, even though there weren’t too many daffodils to show until the very end of the two weeks. We hope for a bit more cooperation from the weather next year for a fantastic show!

Cold Weather Update

Due to the exceptionally cold weather, the daffodils are about two weeks behind schedule. Even the early varieties have been late starting this year!

Because of this we are extending the opening times for self guide walks this year by an extra two days – until Tuesday 9th April.

Visitors booked for this week may like to consider dropping their booking back to the 2nd week – or can still come along and be treated to more of a snowdrop walk – and we’ll be providing a voucher to come back in the 2nd/3rd weeks to be able to catch some of the daffodils when they catch up and begin to show!

Looking back through over 30 years of records, we can’t find any time when the daffodils have been so late!

Snowy Daffodil Update

Some daffodils are beginning to show colour in sheltered places, particularly the variety Early Sensation.

The recent snow has covered the fields with a nice warm protective blanket, so very little damage will occur on the daffodils, there seems to be a very good crop of buds this year so we can look forward to a fantastic show of flowers.
Lots of critters becoming quite brave due to the cold weather, please remember to put out food and water for the birds, you will be rewarded with your own outdoor aviary!

Len on the telly

On the TV again, with a section recorded for Gardeners’ World a while back, while the daffodils were in full show.

See the A to Z of TV Gardening – letter D on BBC iPlayer

You can catch up with it for about another 30 days online. The Whitegate bit is from about 6 minutes in, but do also watch the next section which is about how the chemical Galanthamine which occurs naturally in daffodils is now being farmed, in order to research into treating Alzheimer’s.
